The Director General and Chief Executive of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, has expressed the Agency’s readiness to support the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) in the development of nuclear power for electricity generation and improved energy security in Nigeria.
Dr. Adepoju stated this while receiving a delegation from the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) on a courtesy visit to NASRDA Headquarters in Abuja.
He said NASRDA would support NAEC with its expertise in space science and technology, satellite technology and Earth observation to provide relevant data and technical support for the planning, monitoring and implementation of the nuclear power project.
The NASRDA boss stated that the Agency’s support for the project would contribute to efforts aimed at improving electricity supply in the country, adding that the use of nuclear energy for power generation could provide another source of electricity to meet Nigeria’s growing energy needs.
He said the collaboration between both institutions would also strengthen the application of space technology in supporting major national projects, while promoting the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and national development.
Dr. Adepoju further assured the delegation that NASRDA would make its expertise in satellite imagery, Earth observation and other relevant space technologies available to support areas of the nuclear power project where such capabilities are required.
Earlier, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, while appreciating the NASRDA management for the warm reception, explained that NAEC is a specialised Agency established to promote the peaceful use of atomic energy for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
Dr. Godwin stated that NAEC is seeking the support and technical expertise of NASRDA in advancing its nuclear power project, which is aimed at generating electricity and strengthening Nigeria’s energy security.
He explained that the support of NASRDA, particularly in the areas of geo-mapping, geo-monitoring and other relevant satellite technology that would assist in the planning, monitoring and implementation of the project, while also strengthening collaboration between both institutions in the use of advanced technology for national development.
