The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) have strengthened their institutional partnership to promote research, innovation, space technology and human capital development in support of Nigeria’s socio-economic advancement.
The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the NASRDA Headquarters in Abuja, with both institutions expressing commitment to leveraging their respective expertise and resources to advance science, technology and innovation.
Speaking at the occasion, the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, said the Agency places strong emphasis on human capital development and strategic institutional partnerships as essential tools for driving national development.
Dr. Adepoju noted that building a skilled and innovative workforce, alongside strengthening linkages between academia, industry and specialised institutions, remains critical to advancing Nigeria’s scientific and technological capabilities.
He assured FULAFIA of NASRDA’s readiness to support areas of mutual interest, particularly research, technology development, innovation and capacity building, while expressing optimism that the partnership would facilitate knowledge exchange, collaborative research and the development of practical solutions to national challenges.
According to him, stronger collaboration between specialised institutions and academia would create opportunities for young researchers and students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills needed to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and Vice Chancellor Federal University of Lafia, Professor Mohammed Kida, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Prof. Ibrahim Hassan, expressed appreciation to NASRDA management for the warm reception and willingness to collaborate with the university.
He explained that FULAFIA is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by digital initiatives aimed at enhancing academic excellence, research capacity and technological development.
Professor Kida said the university aspires to rank among leading universities globally, stressing that strategic partnerships with specialised institutions such as NASRDA would be instrumental in achieving this ambition.
He described NASRDA as a critical institution in Nigeria’s development and commended its contributions to advancing the country’s position in space science and technology in Africa.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the areas of collaboration would include Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analysis, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), smart agriculture, research and capacity building.
