SPACE TECHNOLOGY CRITICAL TO SAFEGUARDING LIVES, INFRASTRUCTURE__ADEPOJU

The Director General and Chief Executive of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, has emphasized the critical role of effective regulation, environmental standards and space technology in protecting lives, national infrastructure and public safety.

He made this statement while receiving the delegation from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) on a visit to the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Adepoju explained that strong regulations and strict enforcement are essential to keeping society safe, warning that unchecked activities, including the deliberate blockage of natural waterways, could expose entire communities to serious danger, particularly when enforcement mechanisms are weak.

The NASRDA boss further highlighted the importance of space technology and satellite data in tackling environmental challenges, stating that space-based technologies can provide critical information for monitoring water bodies, detecting environmental changes and enabling timely interventions.

He assured the NIHSA team of NASRDA’s full commitment to strengthening the existing relationship between both institutions in areas of mutual interest, adding that the two agencies have successfully collaborated on several national projects.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Arch. Umar Mohammed, said the visit was aimed at deepening the existing collaboration between the two agencies for sustainable National development.

Arch. Mohammed emphasized that access to accurate satellite-derived data would strengthen NIHSA’s capacity to predict flood events, identify vulnerable areas and support timely interventions to protect lives and property.
