NASRDA ESTABLISHES SPACE INTELLIGENCE UNIT FOR ENHANCED SECURITY AND STRATEGIC OPERATION

The Director General and Chief Executive of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, has affirmed that enhancing the operational efficacy of the Agency’s newly established Space Intelligence Unit (SIU) is pivotal to bolstering security and advancing NASRDA’s strategic positioning within the global geopolitical landscape.

Dr. Adepoju made this known during the official inauguration of the Space Intelligence Unit (SIU) held at the Institute of Space Science and Engineering (ISSE), NASRDA Headquarters, Abuja.

Represented by the Director, Mission Planning and Satellite Data Management, Dr. Abayomi Alaga, the NASRDA boss emphasized that stronger collaboration between the Agency’s technical and operational divisions will ensure that NASRDA continues to lead by example in leveraging science, technology, and innovation for national security enhancement.

He urged participants at the event to maximize the training opportunity by internalizing the knowledge and techniques shared, noting that such capacity building would make them more effective and responsive in their respective assignments.

Dr. Adepoju further stressed that intelligence remains the backbone of security, while security itself forms the foundation of sustainable national development.

He reiterated the Agency’s goal to integrate advanced space technologies into Nigeria’s security architecture for proactive intelligence gathering and threat management.

In his opening remarks, the Director Special Duties, one of the key coordinators of the training, Dr. Yusuf Olatubosun, stated that the program was meticulously designed to expose participants to critical aspects of security intelligence, surveillance operations, situational awareness, counter-intelligence, and data-driven threat analysis.

He added that the establishment of the Space Intelligence Unit represents another strategic milestone in NASRDA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its security, intelligence, and surveillance systems all in alignment with its mandate to safeguard national space assets, facilities, and personnel.

Dr. Olatubosun described the SIU as a visionary initiative of the Director General, aimed at creating a specialized unit responsible for intelligence-driven security operations, proactive surveillance, and rapid response across all NASRDA centers and installations nationwide.
